MONITORING CANDIDATE FILINGS IS TOUGH, WHEN SECRETARY OF STATE MARK RITCHIE’S WEBSITE IS DOWN

    July 3, 2008 7:49 pm

I’ve been receiving reports today that the section of Secretary of State Mark Ritchie’s website which publishes candidate filings has been down numerous times today.  I checked the website a few times and in some instances, I was unable to view the most current candidate filings.

For example, clicking on the link for “All Candidates Filed” produced an error page which read “No candidates found.. Seach Again“  Please note the picture above.

I’ll repeat what I wrote earlier: incompetent is the best word to describe Secretary of State Ritchie Mark. Here’s another way to say incompetent: Brownie Ritchie, you’re doing a heckuva job.

MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “FRANKEN MISLEADS MINNESOTANS ON ENERGY DURING COMBATIVE MPR INTERVIEW”

    July 3, 2008 6:10 pm

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today released the following statement following Al Franken’s appearance on MPR’s Midmorning.

“Al Franken’s performance on MPR is another reminder that he lacks the judgment and maturity to be in the United States Senate.  As the host pressed for direct responses, Franken became belligerent, angry and combative.  He misled Minnesotans about his position on drilling, he struggled to describe his convoluted position on the federal gas tax, and he failed to explain why Minnesotans should pay higher gas taxes. If Al Franken can’t give Minnesotans straight answers on issues as important as energy policy, how can they trust that he will fight to reduce energy prices?”

COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “COLEMAN CHALLENGES AL FRANKEN’S CHANGING POSITIONS ON IMPORTANT ENERGY ISSUES”

    July 3, 2008 4:32 pm

Saint Paul—Today Senator Norm Coleman held a press conference at the State Capitol to address Al Franken’s recent doublespeak on key energy issues.  Yesterday, as cited in multiple news accounts, Al Franken attempted to change his position on the issues of domestic drilling, keeping a federal gas tax on the table, and the viability of increased nuclear energy sources.  Norm Coleman, however, has steadfastly opposed an increase in gas taxes, supports expanded deepwater offshore drilling to boost supply, and has been a steadfast champion of expanding renewable, clean-coal and nuclear energy.

“Yesterday, I traveled around the State of Minnesota visiting the people of this state, and hearing their concerns about gas prices, about energy and their concern that our nation’s liberty and freedom is being held hostage by foreign oil and energy resources,” said Coleman.  “Yesterday, my opponent said that he doesn’t believe that the rising price of gas or energy is the number one issue of concern on the minds of Minnesotans.  I’m not sure what state Al Franken is running for Senate in, but if it’s Minnesota, he might want to take a look at the gas pump.

To be blunt, Al Franken is out of touch on this issue and even more out of touch on the solutions to this problem. Al Franken has shown a deliberately confusing array of positions on energy issues, beginning on June 18th when he said on WCCO that he didn’t believe drilling was the solution to our nation’s energy challenges.  Nine days later, Franken’s position shifted and then six days later it shifted again when Al admitted he really doesn’t support expanded drilling.

SENATOR JIM CARLSON INSTRUCTS STEVE SARVI TO STOP TALKING AT PRESS EVENT

    July 3, 2008 11:18 am

As promised last evening, the Minnesota DFL and 2nd CD DFL candidate Steve Sarvi had a press conference on Monday to complain about high gas prices.  After the press conference was over, a women started asking Sarvi questions about drilling in ANWR.

You can see from the video that Sarvi is struggling with his answer.  You’ll also notice a man come into camera view to give Sarvi the “cut” or “stop talking” gesture.  The man is State Senator Jim Carlson, who happens to be represent my area in the Minnesota Senate.  Seconds after Carlson instructs Sarvi to stop talking, Sarvi attempts to end the conversation.

Does Sarvi need elected officials to travel with him to instruct him when to stop talking?  Is Senator Carlson running for Congress or is Sarvi running? If Sarvi is elected to Congress, will he need someone standing by him on the floor of the House of Representative telling him what to say and when to be quite?  Watch the video and check back for more commentary on Sarvi’s press event.

COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “AL FRANKEN CONTINUES TO MISLEAD MINNESOTANS ON GAS TAX POSITION”

    July 2, 2008 11:51 pm

St. Paul – The Coleman for Senate Campaign today issued the following statement in response to Al Franken’s latest attempt to mislead Minnesotans on his ever-changing gas tax position.

“Al Franken is hop-scotching with the truth again with Minnesotans,” said Cullen Sheehan, Campaign Manager for Senator Norm Coleman. “With each passing day, his inability to give an honest answer to where he stands on energy issues further defines who he is and what he really believes.  Less than a week ago, Franken’s website and his own spokesperson said he no longer supported a federal gas tax increase even though he has supported such an increase for nearly a year.   Today, Franken reveals that he continues to support a federal gas tax and intends to punish taxpayers with such a tax in the possible event that gas prices drop.  It’s bad enough that Franken stands by his support of a ten cents a gallon gas tax, but, to mislead Minnesotans every other week on where he stands on a federal gas tax is simply outrageous.”

Franken For Federal Gas Tax, Claims He Is Now Against It, But Still Wants To Keep In On The Table:

8/24/07: Franken Says Raise Gas Tax In Minnesota, And “Keep It On The Table” Nationally. “Well I would certainly keep it on the table and I think we should do it here in Minnesota. You know, a lot of people want to raise the gas tax so that people buy less gasoline as a response to the threat of global warming. And I’m for cap and trade on carbon.” (Almanac, TPT, August 24, 2007)

6/30/08: Franken Claims He Is Now Against Raising The Gas Tax. “We can’t afford to raise the federal gas tax. Last year, in the wake of the 35W bridge collapse, I said that I wouldn’t take a small increase in the federal gas tax off the table if it would help to pay for needed infrastructure improvements. But that was when gas cost around $2.70 a gallon. Since then, it’s increased by nearly 50%, and Minnesotans are feeling the squeeze. So we need to take that option off the table and find another way to fund our infrastructure: I’ll vote against any increase in the federal gas tax.”       (“Gas Prices,” Al Franken for Senate, http://www.alfranken.com/pages/gas_prices, accessed June 30,  2008)

7/2/08: Franken Wants To Keep Gas Tax Increase On The Table.

Reporter: “So, you’re taking it off the table, is it off the table forever if you’re elected for six years, twelve years? You’re no longer ever going to support a gas tax? Or, if the price of gas drops –”

Franken: “If the price of gas drops precipitously, I would put it, it’ll jump right back on the table as something that I would consider.”  (Al Franken, Capitol Press Conference, July 2, 2008)

COMING TOMORROW: EMBARRASSING VIDEO CLIP FROM SAVRI PRESS EVENT

    July 2, 2008 10:44 pm

The Minnesota DFL and 2nd CD DFL candidate Steve Sarvi had a press conference on Monday to complain about high gas prices.  I’m a very fortunate blogger, because a dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed sent me a video of the event.  Check back tomorrow for a very revealing clip of Sarvi.  I don’t think his campaign and Senator Jim Carlson will like what they see.

COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “AL FRANKEN TWISTS IN THE WIND ON DRILLING POSITION”

    July 2, 2008 9:53 pm

St. Paul – The Coleman for Senate campaign today issued a statement criticizing Al Franken for misleading the people of Minnesota about his position on offshore domestic drilling.

“Al Franken is talking out of both sides of his mouth on the important issue of deepwater drilling,” said Cullen Sheehan, campaign manager.  “Just over two weeks ago, Al Franken indicated he does not support domestic oil drilling to address our energy needs.  Today, as polls show Americans want more domestic drilling, Al Franken says he is now in support of offshore drilling – but he continues to say it will have no positive impact and he believes it will not lower gas prices.  If Franken was paying attention, he would know that part of the reason that oil speculators are hurting consumers is that they are betting on lower supply long into the future.  The longer we wait to drill, as Franken is proposing, the more hurt American consumers will face at the pump.  Al Franken is trying to have it both ways and Minnesotans will see right through it. Minnesotans deserve to know where he really stands on these critical issues, but that is impossible considering Al Franken himself doesn’t seem to know where he stands.”

LIBERAL BLOG UPSET AT FACTS AND ACCURATE QUOTES BEING ADDED TO FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE; SAME LIBERAL BLOG BUSTED FOR LEAVING UNSIGNED ATTACK COMMENTS ON FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE #3

    July 2, 2008 5:55 pm

Almost ten months after unsigned attack comments from “MNCampaignReport” about me were left on the discussion page of Al Franken’s Wikipedia page, Joe Bodell of MN Campaign Report has finally admitted that he was the author.

An example of one of Bodell’s unsigned attack comments

When I blogged anonymously, I always signed my posts with my username through Blogger.  It appears that Bodell was logging into Wikipedia, leaving attack comments about me on the discussion page of Franken’s Wikipedia page and then he wasn’t signing his attack comments. Bodell’s attempts to leave unsigned attack comments about me were foiled by Wikipedia’s software.

Bodell’s public admission comes eight hours after I wrote a post exposing that someone using the username “MNCampaignReport” was leaving the unsigned attack comments on Franken’s Wikipedia’s page, a practice strongly discouraged by Wikipedia’s editors.

FRANKEN’S UNCONTROLLED ANGER AND RAGE HIGHLIGHTED IN MINNESOTA MONTHLY ARTICLE

    July 2, 2008 12:39 pm

A number of the dedicated readers of Minnesota Democrats Exposed have commented to me privately about the odd swerve in the Minnesota Monthly article profiling Al Franken.  While the article generally is the positive fluff you would expect from a magazine published by the owners of Minnesota Public Radio, it does take a dark turn when it focuses on Franken’s temper, anger and uncontrolled rage.

“His critics have had more success making an issue of his temper, suggesting that Franken has occasionally blurred the line between righteous anger and just plain anger. In retrospect, 2003 to 2005 might now be called Franken’s angry years, punctuated by blistering confrontations with FOX News host Bill O’Reilly, columnist Ann Coulter, and other right-wing propagators—who arguably were asking for it—along with moments of pure rage. ‘I’ve witnessed his temper,’ says Skorski. Once, at a convention for conservative activists, right-wing radio-show host Michael Medved was supposed to interview Franken. When Franken learned that Medved had invited John O’Neill—leader of the Swift Boat veterans’ campaign against John Kerry and a ‘disgrace,’ according to Franken—to join them for an impromptu debate, Franken knocked over his chair and ‘went ballistic,’ Skorski says. ‘He apologized, but he does get angry.’

Norton allows that Franken would occasionally boil over in the office: ‘Al has sometimes blown his stack, particularly at stupidity.’ But ‘his anger never got in the way of getting the job done. It was a non-issue.’ Wikler says, ‘There’s a certain kind of pundit or politician who views it all as a game, as tactics—Al doesn’t have much patience for that. I think it’s an asset: He’s a very sweet guy, but somebody who doesn’t see it as a game. He takes this stuff personally.’” Source: Minnesota Monthly, June 28, 2008

Click here for the complete story.

While Team Franken enlists the help of family members and friends to try to spin his “occasional boil over” as a positive, a lot of people have questioned just how deep does Franken’s anger and temper go.

Franken’s anger has gotten physical before, too, as evidenced by his tackling of a heckler at a John Kerry rally, and him making threatening physical gestures, as seen in my pictures from Franken at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Franken was so angry, that he needed to physically restrained.

And, if you were watching Franken’s interview with Esme Murphy on WCCO TV a few weeks ago, Franken’s fist comes flying up during the interview until he catches it — and has to physically restrain himself by bringing his fist back down.

Back in January, Franken verbally went after a young college student at Carlton College who simply didn’t want to be in a picture with him — so, it’s clear it doesn’t take much to set Franken off and get him worked up.

One has to wonder why Team Franken was so emphatic about addressing Franken’s anger and temper in this way.  Obviously his verbal attacks on people over the years are unsettling enough, and challenge the idea that he is capable of working in the United States Senate where such antics will not endear him to members.

But, anger that manifests itself physically as it has before with Franken raises, an entirely different level of concerns that Minnesotans will need to examine.

LIBERAL BLOG UPSET AT FACTS AND ACCURATE QUOTES BEING ADDED TO FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE; SAME LIBERAL BLOG BUSTED FOR LEAVING UNSIGNED ATTACK COMMENTS ON FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE #2

    July 2, 2008 12:13 pm

One of the bloggers behind MN Campaign Report, Jeff Rosenberg, responded to an e-mail I sent about the unsigned comments from “MNCampaignReport” left on the discussion page of Al Franken’s Wikipedia page. Jeff wrote that he “never left unsigned comments anywhere…”

As I noted Nn the Pioneer Press’ blog Political Animal, the owner of MN Campaign Report has never publically disclosed on their blog or on Franken’s Wikipedia page who left the the unsigned comment.  Since multiple people blog at MN Campaign Report, it could be the owner of the blog or another blogger who blogs at MN Campaign Report that left the unsigned comments on Al Franken’s Wikipedia page.  It’s a simple question: who left the unsigned comments on Franken’s Wikipedia page as “MNCampaignReport”?

LIBERAL BLOG UPSET AT FACTS AND ACCURATE QUOTES BEING ADDED TO FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE; SAME LIBERAL BLOG BUSTED FOR LEAVING UNSIGNED ATTACK COMMENTS ON FRANKEN’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE

    July 2, 2008 9:29 am

One of the liberal bloggers behind the blog MN Campaign Report is complaining about facts and accurate quotes being added to Al Franken’s Wikipedia page.  Last year, I proudly made these additions to Al Franken’s Wikipedia page:

    1. Added references to Al Franken’s documented use of illegal drugs.
    2. Added references to Al Franken’s documented support for the war in Iraq
    3. Added references to Mike Ciresi’s document complaint that Franken flip-flopped on support for the war in Iraq.
    4. Added information about Al Franken’s quote where he said Democrats should “…cut off funding for the troops.”

All of the additions I made to Franken’s Wikipedia page were documented and truthful. Most of my additions are still on Franken’s Wikipedia page in some form.

While I proudly signed my name after adding additions to Al Franken’s Wikipedia page, someone using the login name “MNCampaignReport” added numerous paragraphs about me to the discussion section of Franken’s Wikipedia page without leaving a signature:

The small text in the picture above reads “Preceding unsigned comment added by MNCampaignReport…” Here’s my question: Why didn’t the person logging on as “MNCampaignReport” sign their comments?

As a former anonymous blogger, I support the right of people to leave anonymous comments.  I allow anonymous comments on Minnesota Democrats Exposed.  But the person using the handle “MNCampaignReport” was caught leaving unsigned attack comments.

Due to the fact that I proudly signed my name to my additions, the person using the handle “MNCampaignReport” was able to leave their unsigned attack comments about me. They knew who I was, because I wasn’t hiding from my additions.

In fact, the discussion page of Franken’s Wikipedia page is still riddled with unsigned comments from someone using the handle “MNCampaignReport”.

Wikipedia’s software is able to catch people, like the person using the handle “MNCampaignReport” who don’t sign their comments.  The software automatically adds the language “Preceding unsigned comment added by…” when ever an editor comments on a Wikipedia discussion page without signing their comment.

Wikipedia strongly encourages people to sign posts on discussion pages because it “facilitates discussion by helping other uses to identify the author of a particular comment:

Signing your posts on talk pages and other Wikipedia discourse (but not on articles) is not only good etiquette, but also facilitates discussion by helping other users to identify the author of a particular comment, to navigate talk pages, and to address specific comments to the relevant user(s), among other things. Discussion is an important part of collaborative editing as it helps other users to understand the progress and evolution of a work.” Source: Wikipedia

I think their policy makes sense, that is why I proudly signed my additions and comments to Franken’s Wikipedia page with my name. It would appear that the person logging in as “MNCampaignReport” failed to follow Wikipedia’s advice by not signing their additions to the discussion section of Franken’s Wikipedia page.

The person leaving the comment “MNCampaignReport” did write that “…the facts and quotes MBrodkorb asserts may, in their own right, be true…” Source: Discussion section of Al Franken’s Wikipedia page.

“MNCampaignReport” is name of a liberal Minnesota blog maintained by Joe Bodell, who previously worked on John Kerry’s presidential campaign and Steve Kelley’s campaign for governor. MN Campaign Report also raises money for variety of DFL campaigns, including Al Franken’s U.S. Senate campaign.

To this day, the blog MN Campaign Report has not disclosed who repeatedly left unsigned comments on the discussion section of Franken’s Wikipedia page. Also, the person using the handle “MNCampaignReport” never disclosed their identity on the discussion section of Franken’s Wikipedia page.

I’m looking for people to help monitor Franken’s Wikipedia page to make sure truthful and accurate material, consistent with the content that appears on comparable Wikipedia pages, remains on Franken’s page.

I will also need help monitoring the discussion page, specifically looking out for unsigned attack comments and unsigned edits left by liberal bloggers using handles like “MNCampaignReport.” If you’re interested in helping, please use my contact page to send me an e-mail.

MN GOP SCORES DIRECT HIT ON FRANKEN FRONT GROUP ‏ #2

    July 1, 2008 11:33 pm

    “CREW attacked

Officials with the Coleman campaign and the Republican Party responded Tuesday by characterizing CREW as a ‘front group’ for DFL Senate candidate Al Franken and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

They pointed out that Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director, was the weekly ethics expert on Franken’s Air America radio show and that she worked as counsel for Schumer when he was in the House. State GOP Party Chair Ron Carey said that one CREW board member has contributed to the Franken campaign and another to the DSCC.” Source: Star Tribune, July 1, 2008

MN GOP SCORES DIRECT HIT ON FRANKEN FRONT GROUP‏

    July 1, 2008 6:49 pm

“Coleman campaign spokesman Luke Friedrich replied that Coleman is paying fair market value ‘for a cramped basement bedroom.’

He also questioned Sloan’s independence, noting she often appeared as a guest on Franken’s Air America radio show.

‘The only surprise is that it took Al Franken’s surrogate this long to file a politically motivated attack against Senator Coleman,’ Friedrich said, calling her ‘a reliable attack dog for the Democrat Party.’

And the Minnesota Republican Party pointed out that one of CREW’s board members, John Luongo, had contributed $2,000 to Franken, while another board member, Daniel Berger, donated $44,500 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The GOP also noted that Sloan had worked as counsel for the House Judiciary Committee’s crime subcommittee when it was chaired by then-Rep. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who now chairs the DSCC.

‘In the interest of full disclosure, CREW must acknowledge its close relationship to Al Franken, and explain how they can claim to be an independent group with its long history with Democrats and specifically Al Franken and Charles Schumer,’ said Minnesota GOP Chairman Ron Carey.” Source: Associated Press, July 1, 2008

WITH GAS AT $4 PER GALLON, FRANKEN RUNS AWAY FROM PAST SUPPORT FOR HIGHER GAS TAX

    July 1, 2008 5:43 pm

According to changes on Team Franken’s website noticed by MPR, Al Franken has flip-flopped his position on increasing the federal gas tax.  Franken previously stated that he would keep a potential raise in the federal gas tax “on the table.” Franken also strongly advocated raising the state gas tax:

“I don’t like gas taxes in general. I think they’re simply regressive taxes because people need to drive. But I think they should be used as a last resort. And I think certainly in this state we need to increase the gas tax. We haven’t had an increase in the gas tax in 20 years. And I’m in favor of at least a five to ten cent tax increase, and the fluctuation of gas prices is that everyday anyway. I don’t think people would notice it so much. But on the federal level I wouldn’t do it. But I’d keep it on the table.” Source: Al Franken, Twin West Chamber Debate, October 5, 2007

With gas at $4 per gallon, it’s clear that Team Franken is desperately trying to rewrite the long history of Franken’s support for higher gas taxes. It won’t work.

COMPARE SENATOR SCHUMER’S FULL HOUSE TO SENATOR COLEMAN’S SMALL BEDROOM

    July 1, 2008 3:41 pm

The picture on the left from the New York Times, is of a home rented by DSCC Chairman Senator Chuck Schumer.  For $750 per month, Senator Schumer has access to the entire home, which includes access to a full kitchen and living room. The picture on the right from National Journal, is of a home where Senator Coleman rents a small bedroom with a bathroom in the basement for $600 per month.

Senator Schumer has access to the entire home for $750 per month, while Senator Coleman only has access to a small basement bedroom for $600 per month.  I look forward to reading the news about CREW complaint against Senator Schumer.  I won’t hold my breath, because CREW’s executive director once worked for Schumer. Let’s be clear: CREW is a Team Franken front-group.

MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “CREW: A PARTNER IN THE FRANKEN CAMPAIGN; FRONT GROUP BOARD MEMBER CONTRIBUTES TO FRANKEN AS ORGANIZATION ATTACKS SENATOR COLEMAN”

    July 1, 2008 3:16 pm

St. Paul- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today raised questions about the organization CREW and their independence from the Franken campaign.

“The fact that a board member of this front group for Al Franken and Charles Schumer has contributed money directly to Al Franken’s campaign shows this organization lacks any credibility. In the interest of full disclosure, CREW must acknowledge its close relationship to Al Franken, and explain how they can claim to be an independent group with its long history with Democrats and specifically Al Franken and Charles Schumer.”
